I did the exact same thing to mine. It's still banged up and it's been working like nothing ever happened.

What's fantastic is that during that whole October-February time, if I breathed too hard the screen's lamp would shut off.

Now, I'm pretty sure I could completely separate the screen, wires and all, and it would still work (but you know, as long as it's within the 30 minute window the battery gives me)

I'm thinking of trying for a summer internship at some biology facility or other next year. Has anyone else ever done something like that?

I was a heartbeat away from signing up for some program where I'd chill out with elephant researchers in Africa and you know, research elephants.

Depends on what type you're looking for. I was a undergraduate research assistant here at the University of Illinois Institute of Genomic Biology, I worked during the semester helping the graduate students and Dr. Cann(head of the department) run their experiments. I was able to land this because Dr. Cann was also the professor for one of my animal science classes.

I'm not sure what/where to look for high school students though. Most summer internships I know are for undergraduates.

Unless you're looking to work with animals, in which case there are many(depending on where you live) wildlife clinics that accept volunteers.

It's a pretty basic idea, I'm not sure where exactly I could go (although I know of a biology lab in Birmingham that does high school internships), I need to ask my biology teacher about it so I can get more information.

Volunteering at the local wildlife center, which is just outside my town, would be stellar too, though. Basically I'm looking for anything that will net me experience working with animals and/or life science, as soon as possible. I'm assuming here that the more I do, the more comfortable I will be with what I eventually plan to make a career out of, and the better it would look to those who might help me start said career.

Just stay away from them cats, and you'll be good.

I'm having a bit of a disagreement with my mother.

Is this, or is this not, one of the coolest things you've ever seen?

That's a very smart thing to do. A lot of people I know who applied to Vet school this fall have all the academic experience, but little to no experience with directly working with animals.

I'm not sure if you want to be a veterinarian, but I'm assuming something similar? Check out your local zoos. There are a TON of volunteer positions there. I missed out on volunteering at the zoos around me because I was too caught up with working at the theater and making money, and I regret not taking the chance when I had it. Now I have to apply and compete for nutrition internships..

But that's just my opinion.

I've looked at getting one of them before but for the price I'll stick with my pocket knives I already have.

Regards,
