What we will never know is how many followers she would have had if there hadn't been a contest. One can't assume that adding followers is necessarily linear in nature.

Yes, some hacker has overloaded the servers of tweeter. They were shutted down for like 2 hours. After that everything was normal again and the people from tweeter said that they are gonna improve the security of their site.

Maybe they will, but you can't defend against a serious distributed denial of service attack. not on the current internet
