Many Canadians would disagree with you on that one Matrix, not all but many. Free trade has caused many Canadian institutions like Eaton's go bankrupt, or be taken over by American corporations like what happened to The Hudson Bay Company, the oldest incorporated joint-stock merchandising company in the English-speaking world. Not to mention that the American government blatantly ignored all the free trade rulings that the tariffs they put on Canadian soft wood lumber totaling over 5 billion dollars were illegal under NAFTA, and should be paid back in full. The US government has only offered after many years of pressure from both the free trade committees and Canadian government to pay back 78 percent of them. I wonder what the government would say if I stole money and only agreed to pay back 78% of it.

So free trade sounds good, but to me it seems biased to the US and they seem to only follow the rules when it is in their benefit, so it really isn't that great if your not American. But even in the US free trade as allowed many companies to shift manufacturing jobs to Mexico, leaving many American workers without jobs. So free trade has allowed the rich to get richer, some would say at the expense of the working middle class. And how open are our borders now that in mid 2008 all Canadian tourists entering the US will need a passport? I know we need security, but I have no interest in living in a police state (You should read what is proposed in the Patriot Act, I'm no expert but in some of the parts I read there looks to be some scary violations of your bill of rights in there).

Sorry I didn't mean to rant about politics it just happened, and that's all this is, a stupid rant with no point other than; I'm not in love with free trade, open borders yes, just not the current NAFTA, and the Patriot Act in its full form scares me.

Heck, as an American, I'd agree with that. At least most of the time. Some of my fellow Americans aren't the sort I'd let in my house :-/
