Default An airman dies in an F-15 crash

Sadly a US airmen dies after a collision of 2 F-15 eagles in mid-air. I salute this airman.

I feel so bad for this Pilot and his family, there's nothing worse than dieing in a training exercise.

I'm a little perplexed as to how the two jets could just randomly crash into each other. Do we have any Air Force pilots here? Do they fly fairly close formations or something during training?

I'm not an airforce guy, nor do I know the particulars of this accident, but I do believe that formation flying would be something would be covered during traing. Also, colisions between fighters have occured before during simulated combat during training.

You also need to realize that the F-15 is an aging fighter and the entire vehicle line was stood down last month (I belive) due to such mechanical problems related to the age of the aircraft model. Heck even the F-117 (which is newer) is to be retired some time this year. Congress is debating the Air Force claims regarding the F-15's safety/performance and not allowing the Air Force anymore funds for updated aircrafts (ie: F-22).

This hurts a lot on all levels. Eglin Airforce Base is about 20 minutes from my hometown. My father was an Air Force mechanic on F-15s for 18 years at Eglin Air Force Base. Also I am currently at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University an aviation college where this is recognized as a tragedy throughout the university as well. Prayers go out to his family and friends.
