Ouch. Sorry to hear that.
Just out of curiosity, what prompted/compelled you to reinstall Windows?
The fact that windows wasn't starting at all, even through safe mode and all. The only thing to do was to pop in the reboot disk. Thanks for you sympathy though!

Well, in case this ever happens again, your first course of action should be to try to use an alternative boot-up mechanism (rather than the factory restore disk, which will wipe your HD, as you now know). Linux is often good for this (using a LiveCD distribution or even a USB key distribution). Alternatively, take the HD out of your computer and attach it to another computer if you can get a hold of one (sometimes this requires either an IDE-to-USB cable or fiddling with the jumpers to get the master/slave/cable select settings right). In either case, your goal will be to see if the disk can mount (i.e. you can see your files) in which case you try to copy them off to another disk.

Good luck! Hope you didn't lose too much irreplaceable stuff.

I too just lost my C: drive. It was either a virus that got past AVG or the filesystem somehow became corrupted. I also lost files on my other hard drives... including ALL OF MY ALIZEE MP3'S!!

Ended up having to reformat as even using the recovery option and fixing the system files didn't work.

oh well I guess it was time to "upgrade" to Vista 64 anyhow.
