Default Windows XP or Vista

If you were getting a new system and wanted to do all the standard stuff, but also wanted to be able to use older games and applications, which OS would you choose? Also, does anyone know what the difference between XP Home and Pro is?

One more question: which OS is better if you're using SCSI hard drive?

If you're planning to pay enough money for a computer that doesn't mind Vista, go with it. But wait for Service Pack 1 first.

Based on my experience, I would stick with XP for a while longer. The incompatibilities and lack of some drivers is too much of a headache for me. It should iron itself out over time, but the Vista benefits don't overcome the problems at the moment.

If you do decide to go with Vista, I would recommend at least 3 MB of RAM.

Totally agreed! Lacking of drivers real piss me of. I'm thinking on keeping my XP Pro for about 2 or 3 years more, until applications get wide compatibility for Vista.

PS: I think 3GB it's a little too much =S. 2GB 400MHZ or 800mhz (DDR2) will do it.

i have both, and i really like vista. that said, i would probably go with XP. there are still a lot of small issues with vista compatibility. it is getting better everyday though.

within 6 months or so, all of these issues will be gone.

Lightbulb

Vista should be fine for you. Hardware will not be a problem with a new machine. Most/All software should run just fine, except older anti-virus and firewalls. You might also want to read this (really long) review.
