I understand your reasoning here, Ogre, but the reality is that we all DO have this "reality altering" ability, if not quite on the dramatic scale Joey envisioned in the OP, and cannot avoid using it. When you think of someone, for example, you impact their actions and thoughts, moving them subtly towards what you want them to be and do (or sometimes, what you fear they may be and do -- that can also self-fulfill). This doesn't deprive them of free will any more than, say, advertising does, in that it's only an influence, not total control (I don't believe total control is possible), but the point is you cannot NOT do it. So rather than try to do the impossible, avoid it altogether, the trick is to do it always in positive ways that align with mutual will, not in selfish ways that result in opposition.

Same with shaping the lines of fate. You can't avoid doing that, either, and since your own fate is not separate from that of other people's, you cannot avoid shaping the fate of others, either.

Actually, the reasoning you've used applies to any willed action whatsoever, whether it's magical or plain ordinary doing stuff. Any action you take can have unforeseen consequences, potentially dire ones. What do you do, then? Sit in meditation in a room and starve yourself to death? But that, too, is an action with potentially dire consequences.

If I had enough magic to do the things I listed in my first post on this thread (which, alas, I don't), I would certainly do them. Yes, doing those things COULD have dire consequences, but not doing them absolutely WOULD have dire consequences that I can see very clearly.

I would do something extremely selfish, use the magical power on myself. In case something goes wrong, it'll be only me who suffer the consequences.
