Hey, you get a bassist with some serious skills and the right song/solo, it can be pretty wicked! It has a really sexy sound, yes?

Oh hell yeah. Its the backbone of jazz and funk, and can take the lead in some indie rock stuff too. Too many people are just used to hearing the bass play the same thing as the guitar only quieter though, and their ears aren't attuned to the sound. If you manage to not over-do the treble and bass, its a smooth and beautiful sound.

Many great bands use the bassist as a major instrument rather than the backing one. RHCP are a prime example. It adds a new dimension to the music, that many bands are seriously lacking.
And when you hear some like Vic Wooten blast out a few riffs and solos, you get to see what the bass can really do. http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=4dWb-aCWR8U
