First the French government went after the rich. Now it has it in for Nutella.

Despite an outcry in support of the beloved chocolate and hazelnut spread, the Senate passed a measure Wednesday that would triple the tax on palm and some other vegetable oils in the hope of cutting down on obesity.

The "Nutella tax" would affect any foods made with those oils and bring in about €40 million ($51 million).

I also just notice this in the german yellow a few days ago. And I immediately had to think of alizee and her addiction to nutella.
Well, on the other, side it is a reason for her to come again to Germany and buy nutella !

I think I'd read once that the whole reason Nutella was invented in Italy decades ago was to get around a chocolate tax.

I can see their thinking (although I don't agree wit it). I have to ration Nutella - not because it is so expensive, but rather because it puts weight on me faster than anything else.

Nutella was actually invented during WWII to use as a replacement for peanut butter which was in a rationing shortage.
