I'm learning about limits right now, and I can smell my brain burning as it attempts to comprehend the concept.
You know, many great minds have suggested an intimate link between music and mathematics. Perhaps a little work with numbers translates to otherworldly ability with notes . |

School, it's the ultimate form of brainwash that's legal. Well actually it's not bad if the schools were taught right, but that could've just been my bad experiences with teachers and methods. Hope you survive FRA, i'd rather die than go to school again.

I kinda agree but In 50-60 years I'd probably give anything to be at the age I am now

Often times, when you have a problem like this and you're not quite sure what to do, a sanity check will give you a quick clue. For instance,
y=-|x-4|. You know it's shifted, but maybe you're not sure. And you know it's some sort of V shape. So, let's figure out what happens when you plug in x= 0. You get -|-4|, so y = -4. That gives you a point. Then, you plug in x=4. That gives you y= 0. (You knew that was the place to give you the 0). Then you plug in x=8. That gives you -4 again. So, you know that it's an upside-down V, and the cusp of the V is at (4,0). That means it was shifted 4 to the right. |

When in doubt, solve the equation!

Since I'm doing my math homework anyway and this thread has been resuscitated, I guess I'll give you an in-depth explanation (although fsquared has given the best/easiest way).
Exclude the (-) sign because you know that it just flips the function over the x-axis. Definition of absolute value: |x|= x (if x≥0) -x (if x<0) So, in your problem,|x-4|is only non-negative if x is greater than or equal to 4. And it is negative if x is less than 4. Therefore: f(x) = x-4 if (x≥4) -(x-4) if (x<4) Now you have two linear functions that are easy to visualize and meet the x-axis at x=4. Voila, it is clear that the graph moves to the right . And I can't believe I just wrote all that, what has school done to me ? |
