Default The rescue of a bird called Alizée

Two days ago, I had noticed a baby robin had fallen out of it's nest. I tried to find the nest, but had no luck. I knew it probably wouldn't survive long on it's own, so I decided to take it in. I decided to name it Alizée after my favorite singer. I decided to put it in a pet carrier and put it in the window. That way it would be protected, but it's parents could still feed it and they seem to be making regular visits. I will be consulting with other people on how best to handle this. I will hopefully hang onto her (him?) until I think she's strong enough to fly. If it's a male, I will have to change the name to Alizé!

That's pretty cool Scruffy. It sounds like she's speaking French maybe.

Here's part 2 of this story. In the hope of making the bird a little more comfortable, I went out and bought a couple of house plants and some peat moss. I was able to capture mama, or was it papa, showing up to feed her.

I did some research and found out females have the same coloring on the back of the head as on the back, so that means it's a girl and so the name is Alizée.

I will hang onto it one more day to let it gain some more strength and get some stick time. I'll explain 'stick time' tomorrow.

I love robins. They are efficient bug and worm hunters and fun to watch. Thanks for saving Alizee!

Hopefully she sticks around so you don't have to worry about mosquitoes.

It's kind of funny you should mention that. With the big openings of the pet carrier, I was so sure I'd be getting flies in the house, I went out and got some screen material to cover up the vent holes on the side, but I haven't seen one fly. I don't know if maybe the sight of a robin scares them off?

Edit:

Alizée is free again!

I added some sticks to the cage. I figured Alizée fell out of the nest and onto the ground and so I figured she didn't get much stick time (That's an aviation joke). But the sticks just seem to impede her movement.

I also got an e-mail from a friend of my sister in law who is a state permitted wildlife rehabilitator. She said the bird cannot learn to fly in the confines of the pet carrier, so I figured it was time to set Alizée free.

I put some cotton gloves on so hopefully there was little of my scent on her. I went out when I saw mama Robin in the area. I had her cupped in both hands. I brought her over to some dense bushes where I planned to release her. I took one of my hand to reach into my pocket and that's just when Alizée decided to make a break for it and she fluttered to the ground. After a few seconds, she scampered into those bushes.

I tried to peer in, but the sun was too bright and the bushes to dense. It was time to let her go. Mama was near by, so I think she'll be alright.
