I doubt two things...

1. We will not make first contact within twenty years. Possibly within the next century, but not in twenty years. First contact will change the world in every way we can think of, and such a change occurring so relatively quickly? *clears throat for Macaulay Culkin impression* I don't think so

2. Other intelligent, sentient beings will not resemble human form. I mean, it could, but we're really stroking ourselves by expecting aliens to look like our retarded cousins. Think about it, think about ALL the lifeforms on our puny little planet. How many of them resemble human form? How many of them have similar anatomies? Shit, how many of them are even bipedal?

I'm just saying, I really don't think a UFO is going to land and a two-armed, two-legged creature will walk down a metallic platform standing erect.

It's entirely possible that if we land on a life-capable planet, the only living thing we'll find is some space-algae or something.... or if we're really goddamn lucky, plants.

The universe is a pretty freaking big place, and I doubt we have neighbors close enough to encounter within such a short span of human history.

I think applying Earthly logic when speculating about what could happen on other planets is silly.

1. No one knows the answer to that of course but I personally agree with you, give it another a few 100 years or so!

2. I think it will go both ways, some will resemble us and some will not ... it all depends on the environment they inhabit. If that said environemnt is earth-like than yes they will be similar to us. On earth actually lots of animals are similar to us; maybe not in the examples you give but does that subtract from resemblance... I think not! We are similar to many animals here on earth, some in different ways than others but it said that all mammals have some sort of resemblance. We all breath air, need food and water; give birth to live young etc. Even dogs are said to have similar emotions to humans and then you have monkeys and primates who are literally almost the exact same thing as us! To further solidify my point, all these said animals I mentioned all have a similar habitat to us humans!
You are right about the vastness of space and it is a mathematical probability that though other life may exist we may never reach them due to the extreme distances that is our universe or even multiverse!

Well I'm sure extra terrestrial life would have certain similarities like the need for food/water, curiosity, being carbon-based, etc...

I thought I had typed "besides primates" but I guess not. Yea monkeys are pretty damn similar to us (I won't get into evolution here) but besides them, aesthetically, I can't think of anything similar.

I'm saying we should stop expecting

and start looking for

1. Establish that there actually is organic life elsewhere in the universe
2. Attempt to discover sentient, intelligent (and by intelligent I don't mean chrome and lasers and shit, I mean able to recognize that we are a different creature than them and so on) beings elsewhere in the universe after establishing extra terrestrial life does exist (hell, we could all be wrong and God zapped us all here)
3. Establish diplomatic relations with extra terrestrial life if they are capable of communicating and maintaining said relationship.
4. ???
5. Profit
