Buying the single without "DRM"?

Does anyone know where I can buy the Mademoiselle Juliette single without any Digital rights management? It pisses me off to no end that I can't switch my music from an iPod to another non-apple player, so I refuse to use iTunes. Anyone?

It is not legally available without DRM. You must buy the DRM version, and then strip the coding, if you want to be able to use it like you should be able to.

Removing the DRM is trivial thing.

But if you aren't capable of doing it, then you can always buy the promo CD.

I did both :-P Got the download from FNAC using their free D/L with sign-up, bought it from Starzik using a digital gift-card I got myself, and then bought the promo CD's for good measure :-)

This is the crude way to do it, you lose some quality but it allows you to put it on an Ipod. Use Nero (or another type of burning program) to burn MJ to an audio CD, then Itunes will take it off the CD to be used on an Ipod. That's also the way to strip Apple's DRM off of Itunes purchased songs. Use Itunes to burn a CD with whatever songs you want and then use a program like CDex (free) to convert to MP3s. Of course, this is only legal for purchased songs and your own use. If you want to try this way and need help just PM me.

Why to use some crappy MP3 when there is lossless formats like FLAC ?

DRM AAC -> FLAC

and the quality stays 100% the same.

I think the main reasons why people don't use FLAC are Apple's refusal to support it on iTunes and the iPod, and also because a single CD of FLAC is 350-450 megs.

Of course, you are correct FLAC is lossless and you can rip the CD to FLAC using another program (I don't think CDex rips to FLAC). However, I believe no matter what format you finally get, the process of taking a WMA (the file format of my legal MJ), burning to CD and ripping will cause a loss of quality. I just wanted to warn jaco of that fact (IMHO). It's a blunt instrument way of transferring music.

No it doesn't.

AAC to FLAC is lossless conversion.
Just like is ACC to WAV (PCM)
or MP3 to WAV (PCM)
or MP3 to FLAC

The resulting file has excatly the same information as the original file. It does not cause data loss. Hence the name, LOSSLESS conversion/compression. And that applies as long as the destination file has the same sample rate and resolution as the source file. It can duplicate it 100%.

Only converting to lossy format will cause quality loss. Lossy formats are formats such as MP3, MP2, (OGG) Vorbis, etc...

But converting to WAV, FLAC, and so on, NEVER causes loss of information. If we stay all the time purely in digital format. And not mix up with some decades old analogic recorders in the process.

(and since you mentioned first burning it to CD... Well, CD is lossless too in this case. It's 16bit, 44.1kHz, uncompressed. So it can contain ALL the information that the original WMA file has (since when it's uncompressed (decoded) for listening, it's exactly the same specs (unless you have fucked up soundcard settings and up or down sample it... but then you can blame only yourself)).

So to summarize...
DRM AAC -> CD -> MP3 = LOSSY
DRM AAC -> CD -> FLAC = LOSSLESS100% the original AAC quality
DRM WMA -> CD -> MP3 = LOSSY
DRM WMA -> CD -> FLAC = LOSSLESS 100% the original WMA quality

( and there's no really need to do the CD phase... it can be replaced with many other methods to remove the DRM... but since you mentioned it, I used it... It's a valid option in some cases ).
