A female character, Dolphin, was asked by one of the viewpoint characters, Correl, if she and Dragon had been lovers, and she laughed and said that Dragon was "as gay as Paris." I showed that passage to a friend of mine living in Paris and he was offended. "Paris isn't gay!" he insisted. Of course the original meaning in English of the word "gay" is not "homosexual" but happy, cheerful, colorful, etc. and "gay Paris" is a very old description for your town. But the "homosexual" meaning of "gay" has so completely replaced the original meaning that in learning English this friend of mine learned that meaning instead of the older one.
