I was scared to see how many people got this wrong on facebook .... it truly has me scared at how mathematically illiterate we as a country are! Obviously something isnt being taught correctly in our basic grade school mathematics that about 50% of the people asked this answer incorrectly!

I will give the correct answer after a "sufficient" amount of people have answered!
There is no embarrassment if you get this wrong; it just shows a flaw in our mathematics educational system! Also the poll is anonymous!

Yes I think it does, plus I am thinking of writing a thesis on this
..... I am trying to be a TA in Grad-school as well as I am trying to get into volunteering to help teach math to young kids

How? I guess most of the people don't ever use basic rules in their entire life. I would be worried if kids in my class answer it incorrectly because then I would feel that I failed to explain or convey the meaning of rule properly.

I want to convince myself that it really matters and how it does. I'm not stuck on the opinion that it just doesn't matter.
