Beware the sin of "rasterbation"
Long ago I used to "rasterbate" like that all the time for community events like historical exhibits. The problem with rasterbation is what you'll hear people whisper - you'll go blind matching the edges! It's even worse than you might imagine, because the paper tiles can stretch enough during printing to make perfect alignment impossible. But if you want to try this, Google's free Picasa tool has long provided the image tiling function you need.
A labor-intensive way to save money on ink is to print a line drawing and then color it in by applying traditional (cheap) "poster paint." Nowadays I can borrow a local large-format (up to 3 feet wide) inkjet printer used to print old-fashioned wall maps, by compensating the owner. You definitely want to use this method if you can. |

High-quality color photo prints are now historically CHEAP!
People today are SO SPOILED! Do you have any idea how expensive it was to produce one-off photo prints before one could use inkjet printers? Here are the numbers. In 2002 at http://www.nytimes.com/2002/04/25/te...printer&st=nyt David Pogue wrote this:
At a dinner party at our house last week, a guest was so blown away by something he saw... an enormous glossy photo, 13 by 19 inches... One reason most people have never seen their photos at that size is that they're very expensive: about $25 each from traditional photo labs. If you own a wide-format inkjet photo printer, on the other hand, the cost of paper and ink works out to about $2 per poster... When you feed these... [printers]... special photo paper (about 50 cents a sheet up to 8 1/2-by-11 size), you can't tell the difference between a printout... and a Kodak-developed print, even if you mash your eyeball right up to the paper... |

Sometimes I get surprised when people here think about importing posters. Shipping charges makes it even more expensive. Last edited by Merci Alizée; 06-26-2010 at 05:20 AM.. |

Custom poster services reviewed
The New York Times now reviews a number of services for creating custom posters, including those of enormous size, here. It's well worth reading if you are seriously looking at creating an expensive poster.
