You might have been either running the bow on the strings too hard, too fast, at a wrong angle, or on a slightly wrong placement on the string. The hair of the bow could have also been dry. More rosin fixes that. Although you most likely have dropped the instrument altogether so this information is purdy much useless

Like Azhiri pointed out, sounds to me like a bow issue. As in, you might've been playing too close or too far from the bridge. Or maybe you just had a crappy violin? I used a crappy violin until I bought my own in the 7th grade. Much better sound quality then rentals.

that could be it.
My mom has the propensity to think that it's perfectly acceptable to get the absolute cheapest version of something, and my rental was no exception. I tried to learn it I believe Feb through April of my fourth grade year, gave it up, and randomly got another equally cheap violin for christmas of that year (you know, several months after I forgot how to play)
