Going gear-happy?
2010-04-16 rfi Music interview writes:

Alizée, the electro-chic return Fourth album Paris 16/04/2010 - RFI Musique: For this album, you decided to work with the label Institubes and the electro group Château Marmont. Why was that? Alizée: Since the previous album, Psychédélices, I produce my own records and work with people whose ideas mesh well with mine. Three years ago, I had my single Fifty Sixty [written by Jean Fauque] mixed by David Rubato, one of the producers on the Institubes label. That’s how I met Jean-René Etienne, the boss of the label, with whom I worked on an idea of a different sort of album, more narrative inspired. At first it was going to be an EP, but I met up with the other producers, Tahiti Boy, Rob and Tacteel, and we ended up making an album... A group like Château Marmont shouldn’t have to remain underground... I think they should be more visible to the general public. As melodists, they’re not very far from the likes of Mylène Farmer, for example. What makes their work different from mainstream pop is in the production. And that’s a good thing. French pop is having a hard time coming up with fresh sounds, it seems to me. I hope that after this album, other mainstream artists will want to work with them.
There is no doubt that the recorded music industry as we have known it for a century is facing its final hours. That is hardly a poor reflection on the managers of traditional recording labels, who will all have to close up shop sooner or later. You can still write songs on commission/speculation for superstars with substantial live-act careers. You can also write songs on commission/speculation for advertising campaigns. You can even write songs on commission/speculation for social movements of the rich and oppressed (but not the poor and oppressed!) But what you can no longer realistically hope to do much longer is write songs for sale to private individuals, because it is so trivial and cheap to store and transmit vast amounts of data without corruption, and ever fewer people feel morally obliged to pay for the music they enjoy - or won't switch to legitimate free music or other entertainments, rather than pay. All the same, I recently took a trans-Atlantic voice call from someone claiming to be Cécile de Ménibus, of all people. I was rather skeptical about this self-identification. Anyway, she told me that her cousin's boyfriend's barber's sister's geometry-teacher's dogwalker's neighbor's ex-husband's gardener's doctor's housekeeper - on whom she would stake her life - reported the REAL reason that Institubes went under was because of something Alizée may have said. It seems that when Alizée visited Institubes for the first time, so the story goes, Jean-René noticed that she seemed crestfallen and he asked why. You know how nice Alizée is - she did not want to say anything hurtful. But finally she was coaxed to admit that she was unaware that Jérémy had built such a nice recording studio at home - she had thought the one at Institubes would be even nicer. Well, that's all they needed to hear. What do you know, goes the story, but they went overboard in fitting out the Institubes studio so as to maintain Alizée's interest in working with them. But, personally, I really don't buy ANY of this at all! There is not even a SHRED of reliable evidence to back it up. UNLESS, that is, you want to give credence to the video footage below...

P.S. I have no idea if anyone from Remulak was involved. |
