New York's Freedom Tower - Page 3

Anyone else remember the exact moment they found out? I was at work back when I delivered mail for JP Morgan Chase. Was delivering the mail at 8am in the 100 building, I stopped at the elevator and saw it on tv. 8 years later, now I'm in the military; no more long hair either.

yup. I was in history class in the 6th grade. though, i thought that terrorists had taken over the trade center, not hijacked planes into it. so i had a image of a building surrounded by police and SWAT and such.

then during orchestra, we saw the infamous footage of the plane hitting the 1st tower..

And now, I've started my path towards an active duty US Solider.

I found out through my teacher in tears (she and many more of my friends and people I know would go on to lose someone) and then seeing the smoke after I left school. I am about 6-7 miles from ground zero.... and the smoke was just so high so black...... and so evil looking the way it formed a 90 degree angle when the wind took it, could be seen from that distance

All i remember was my school was in absolute panic but we didnt know what was going on (the students that is) I was in 6th grade and the teachers didnt tell the students but everyone knew something was wrong. Parents were taking kids out of school like crazy and for the rest of us, we went to our home rooms and just sat in lock down until 3pm... once again teachers not telling us much but a lot were in tears. I remember a kid at lunch telling us the Twin Towers blew up, but we all just called him an idiot because something like that happening before 9/11 was almost inconceivable esspicaly to the 10yr old mind. Even though the Towers looked skinny, if you have ever saw them in person they are actually massive and very very fat. 200ft by 200ft is a massive floor plan... so once again.. for a building like this to come down was just total shock to every New Yorker young or old. The one thing I remember was after what happened every time a fighter jet would fly bye, me and my friends would always scream "yeaaaaah america get them wooooooooooooot!!!" I think thats probably a huge part of the reason I want to be a fighter pilot. I try to imagine September 10th 2001 and all the days prior and I always wish I could go back in time and live in the pre 9/11 world. Everything was so much simpler then!

Though it was a horrifyingly painful time in out nations history, we must never forget it. As I reflected today or yesterday now, I couldn't help but feel pissed that after 8 yrs. so little progress has been made on the new buildings. In 1930 it took a little over a year to complete the Empire State bldg. With the technology today the freedom towers should have been completed yrs. ago.

8 years passed... long time. Though I was only ten I remember that day very good, something has ended, something new has started since then.
I came back from school, it was about 3 p.m here and I saw it on TV, but at age 10 it was hard for me to fully understand the situation, but now...

The Empire State Building wasnt built on top of trains former malls and massive infrastructure like that in the “bath tub.” The Freedom Tower had to be built over the *running* subway and path trains which has to be closed at times to allow for construction. Also not only are they building the Freedom Tower, but they are also building a museum and a memorial as well as 3 other towers and a transportation hub along with a performing arts center. So if you look at the scope of the project; it is easily one of the biggest if not the biggest construction project in the country. Also with new NY buildings codes ( I think passed last yr), buildings have to withstand earthquakes now along with massive hurricanes, something that the buildings of the Empire State Building’s day didnt have to be, along with the Freedom Tower trying to be built "terrorist proof" so to speak. If you look at the huge slab of concrete mixed with the massive steel columns you could see just how strong this building is going to be along with why it is taking so long. Furthermore it has only been 3 yrs since construction has started in 2006 not in 2001 or 2002; it took till 2003 to clean the site up entirely just to allow for something to be built in the bath tub. The reason that took 3yrs after 2003 was because just to get a design and establishing what to build there, in which everyone disagreed with each other on, was more of a complexity than the actual engineering itself. Also if you look there are two freedom tower designs, the first one was going to be built but was rendered unsafe from truck/road side bombs so they delayed the tower even more to come up with a new safer design and that is the current tower design. For 3yrs, if you look at the site today major progress has been done. The museum and memorial are 70 percent done, tower 4's foundation is pretty much complete and as well, for the freedom tower.... the foundation is 100 percent done and the 200ft lobby is coming along very nicely. Right now the freedom tower rises a 100 and some wad feet above the ground. By the start of next yr the freedom tower will be rising on the floor a week schedule, expected to be topped out in late 2010 and fully completed *by* 2013. Just dont think a lot of work wasnt been done because it has; you just cant see it because most i *7* stories (70ft) underground. I hope this clears things up a little.

FRA you made this same point earlier in this thread. I appreciate your passion and there is some merit in what you are saying, but as you even described there was a lot of beauracracy and red tape that has held up this project much more than the difficult cleanup and challenging engineering. I'm sure the usual ass kissing, arm twisting, baby kissing went on for a number of yrs. before they arrived at the architect, and building construction co. or companys that got the bid to do the project. Due to the nature and motives of the terrorists, rebuilding should have been priority one. These are just my thoughts and opinions and I could be wrong.

I was 6 (or maby 7, i dont really know TBQH, my birthday is september 7th so i could have been turning 7 or 6 just days before...) at the time, i remember that we were locked down for pretty much the entire day and TONS of people were getting checked out. My mom was actually subbing at our school that day lol.
