fsquared, I'm referring to actual French words that are used in English even though there are English equivalents that could be used but sometimes are not.

Or are you talking about actual French words imported into English (of which there are really quite a lot).

A sense of cultural crisis and a feeling that one must protect one's culture/language against assimilation is a recurrent theme in many cultures' histories. Since mainstream American culture has of late been more the assimilator and not the assimilatee (sorry for the neologisms) I think it's not always easy for some Americans to relate to this feeling.
Well said fsquared, are you saying that in this day and age...people are rethinking culture and language and are finding the answers and having to protect it?

This is totally off-topic and I think the mods should move this into its own thread somewhere else (but I like the discussion). Yes, and I think a lot of times the use of a French word (when there is an English equivalent) is to convey a certain tone, a certain je ne sais quoi, if you will, to the utterance. ( ).
French is often used to give an air of sophistication or erudition to the conversation (e.g. Humbert in Lolita, but there are much better examples). I don't know what English words inserted into French sound like to French speakers, but maybe it conveys hip-ness or being urban or modern or contemporary (or rebellious).

Not sure what you mean by "answers". People have been thinking about this ever since the concepts of cultural identity have asserted themselves. One (perhaps obscure to most) example is Paisii's declarations of Bulgarian ethnic identity in the 1700's at the time of their "national revival". While they were under Turkish dominion at the time, my understanding is that in fact he was also exhorting his fellow Bulgarians not to assimilate culturally with the Greeks. Standardization of the Bulgarian language also involved various purges of Turkish import words (though a whole lot remain).

It's a very interesting set of questions; I'd like to discuss them in more detail...

Ah ha! The maxi is a real physical object, not just a download. I thought so!

Thanks for finding that :-)

Thanks for the link Toc. There are some new pics there of Alizee in a studio autographing what looks like albums or magazines.

Is this CD going to be sold exclusively in France?
