It really comes down to her ability to reinvent herself. Her idol, Madonna, has survived with a combination of raw talent, catchy tunes and lyrics, and the wisdom to reinvent herself from time to time.

Moi-Lolita presented all of these. Here was this image the girls identified with, combined with great lyrics, catchy music, and Alizee's talent with song and movement combined with the amazing essence of who she is. Alizee needs to again capture the hearts of her audiance with some type of compellng story. If she can, she'll fly back. If not, it may be a struggle.

One contrast that should be taken into account is that Madonna was quite the scandal-maker, from the start, and got ahead by pushing the envelope, starting with the rebellious girl in Borderline, then the Like a Virgin video, the Marilyn thing for Material Girl, teen pregnancy in Papa Don't Preach, then it was the black Jesus figure in Like a Prayer that got her Pepsi ad campaign cancelled, the Gaultier costumes on that tour, the Justify My Love video (banned from MTV, presumably on purpose), Erotica, the Sex book, etc.etc. (and that was just in the first decade).

Alizée's image, if one considers the avatars here, is mostly angel wings and butterflies. I wonder how drastic a break with that image might have to be in terms of reinvention. I personally hope it's not like Christina Aguilera's Stripped/Dirrty makeover.

I'm not suggesting that she go off the deep end (she has to remain true to herself - this is why we were all drawn to her after all) however, she does have to keep refreshing herself - "keep it new" so to speak.

The La Isla Bonita performance demonstrated what a striking beauty she is (much more so than Madonna), and how her beauty and presence are a very powerful combination. Also, she has a natural style, a poise, that most do not have. Perhaps this performance gave us a glimpse of one of the "looks" of the new adult Alizee.

Yet at the same time, we must look at the Alizée we saw performing For Me, Formidable with Jenifer (one of my favourites

). We cannot tell which image Lili is going to take, but it could be either one.

My money would be on the more mature Formidable image. Why? Though Alizée is beautiful in the Isla performance, that was three years ago, and she has a limited time left with the ability to look like that. With the older, more mature image, she will look great for a long time. It's almost as if she'll be moving to give new young singers room, while taking up a different space in the music market.

Of course, I wouldn't bet on what Alizée's image will be. From one album to another, she changed from a pedophile magnet to a squeaky clean teenager!

I'm reminded of an old episode of "Parker Lewis Can't Lose" (a show on FOX in the late 80s) where Parker is trying to talk about the power of confidence, and he's giving examples of people who succeed because of their confidence. At one point, he's like "and Madonna....FACE OF A COLLIE!!...how does she do it??.....CONFIDENCE!!".

Actually I've been struck by how different I think she looks in La Isla Bonita than in anything else. Frankly I'm not sure I would have recognized that she was the same person as in her other videos if it wasn't labeled. Maybe it's something about the eye makeup. Am I the only one?
