Default Translations of videos to languages other than English

Well I think most people here felt we were neglected by Alizee, so I think it was good to get some worries, some concerns off our chests.

On another note, two or three months ago we had talked about how to convert some of the English subtitle files, such as the ones I put together for shows like SAGA and DALS, into languages like Spanish or Russian. We kind of dropped the subject and I haven't had time to do some research on it until now.

I tried Google translation toolkit and it works very well as far as the length of a subtitle file you can translate and it keeps the same timing as the original file. I did a quick check with it on the first part of the SAGA show, a clip that was about 17 minutes long (2,500 words) and the timing at then end was still dead on.

One minor problem is it didn't do the line returns so some of the text runs off the screen, but that's relatively easy to fix. I might have to change the color of the font too.

Of course the real question is, how good is the translation?

I just threw this clip together real quickly for demo purposes. Once I finish the first part of SAGA, I'll have to have someone who speaks Spanish, maybe Fall or Edsel, look at it to see if it's worth continuing on with the rest of it.

here is the translation of the video posted above

Alizée: we are here!

Christophe Willem: go tac! we have finally arrived!

Alizée: Finally arrived!

Christophe: I take your bag?

Alizée: yeah, I'm a girl, I need a lot of clothes! thank you sir

Voice Over: Alizée and Christophe Willem are going to spend a weekend here in this property of Grive

Alizée: Wow! It's awesome ! it's too good here

Alizée interview: I am very impatient to spend time, with other artists, it is true that we used to meet on TV shows but we never have the opportunity to ask, to discuss , to spend time together and I think we will discover things about each, learn to know each other and I think it will be very interesting days and moments.

Alizée: I feel good here, it's nice!

Christophe: there's a pigmer!

Alizée: you saw that's good!

Christophe: it's so beautiful

Alizée: I think we can stay longer no? do not you believe ? on holiday !

Christophe: you settle down squarely, I just put my bag, I have not released anything

Alizée: well listen yes! are we going to see what's going on?

Christophe: we'll have a look

Voice Over: Christophe and Alizée are curious to discover this property of the Gerse which holds many surprises for two hardened city-dwellers

Christophe: Oh look!

Alizée: a vegetable garden?

Christophe: a vegetable garden!

Alizée: then?

Christophe: it's going to be for Patrick that! so what do we have?

Alizée: I'm bad! I do not have a green hand at all!

Alizée: it's zucchini!

Christophe: or zucchini?

Alizée: here, zucchini

Christophe: but they are round? (he tears one), oh yes, they are round

Christophe: salad, that's a good value!

Alizée interview: I know very little Christophe, I do not know his life, I know he is very funny. maybe it's to hide something, I do not know. maybe we will discover common passions, this is the purpose of the stay

Christophe: Do you ever have a storm in your mouth?

Alizée: no, but look, it's coming!

Christophe: that's nice! Come on, let's go for a jog!

Alizée: you run too fast!

Voiceover: Christophe and Alizée have taken refuge in the house but the rain is already over.

Patrick Fiori has arrived!

Alizée: go, I give you a kiss

Patrick: how are you?

Alizée: yes and you?

Patrick: I'm fine!

Alizée: Welcome!

Christophe: Install yourself! , we'll drink until we still love each other!

Alizée: for the moment yes! in the eyes we drink!

Christophe: do you already have to sing songs from other artists in front of them?

Patrick: yes! I did it with Serge Lama (French singer) in a special show! it's particular ! because obviously we sing the song differently

Alizée: it's on!

Patrick: we bring our paw

Alizée: that's what's good, we personalize and put our personal touch

Christophe: me that's what I find hot!

Patrick: I have the pleasure of singing one of your songs, do not blame me if a moment, there's a note that changes

Christophe: me, it does not bother me.

Alizée: I too could not have the same voice as you (talking to Patrick), for me, it's hard to sing what you sing!
So you (talking to Christophe) do not talk about it, with your tone super high it's not easy at all!

Patrick: but you (talking to Christophe), did you ever have to sing other songs in front of them?

Christophe: never!

Patrick: Oh ok! I had fun working on your songs! with the piano!

Christophe: we have no clue about what are you going to sing?

Patrick: I will not give you any, and do not try to work on me, you'll have nothing!

Alizée interview: I am very very shy and very modest, I enjoy a little bit of seeing other artists sing my songs in front of me and the end to face the great artists who take songs that have marked our lives ! I think I would be very very emotional

Alizee: well, I think we're going to have to sing now

Christophe: oh well, voila!

Alizée: I'm going to start

Christophe: my glasses, so that I can see you well

Patrick: what are you going to sing?

Alizée: I will try to sing "double je", I love this song, and I would love to sing it

Christophe: oh yes?

Alizée: Yeah, but I need a heart because I might be a little lonely on the song so I'm counting on you!

Christophe: yes, we will make hearts

Alizée: come on! I'm going for it

Christophe: Come on!

Patrick: ohh! Alizée !!

Christophe: the crowd is delirious!

SONG:

when I grow up I'll be beegees
or pilot of Formula 1
in the meantime I disguise myself
it is true
that all the costumes suit me well

red, black
Blues, hope,
in me
Of all the colors I like to see

That's how I can (x2)
Should know what you want (x2)
That's how I can (x2)
Should know what you want (x2)

When I get big it will be easy
Finally I will know who I am

Yes, but in the meantime I'm going
That's right, I'm hiding and I'm running away
I cry, I laugh, I'm afraid, I want to, I know

Thanks for posting that bebert. Luckily we do have English translations for the following shows. I will try and get those translated into Spanish.....maybe even Russian too.

Here is the first episode of SAGA with Spanish subtitles. If someone who speaks Spanish can take a look at the subs and see if Google did a good job of translating it, I'd appreciate it.

I wonder if any of our Spanish speaking members have had a chance to look at this to tell whether Google translate did a good job of translating the subtitles for this?
