Because it's not seen the same way over here. Asians especially hold to old customs that if you are tan, you are seen as someone that has to toil in the fields. In the Western world, it has become so popular because it means you either have the money to go to a tanning bed, or a lot of free time to spend going to the beach/lake/fancy vacations.

Asians have naturally tanned skin. However, if they look like the "tan mom," then, yeah, they probably toil in the fields!

Yeah, but they still get darker in the sun. My boyfriend is Chinese and he looks white until summertime.

They need some of those 'face shields'/'visors' I see some people walking around with. It seems around here it's mostly asians wearing them. I'm not really sure if they're meant to protect your face from the UV light or what but I haven't got up the gall to ask yet.
