I loved Nirvana (and still do) .. basically that is all I listened to in Junior High and High School. To this day .. the only time I have gone to a record store to buy a CD .. it has been to buy Nirvana.

I was easily more obsessed with Nirvana when I was younger, than I am with Alizee now. I still remember the day that Kurdt died .. horrible day :(

I literally know every word to every song by heart ..

The French band Daft Punk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daft_Punk) collaborated with Japanese anime legend Leiji Matsumoto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leiji_Matsumoto) to make their musical film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. Here are the videos in order (I really recommend watching them in this order, otherwise the story doesn't make much sense):

One More Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smb2kzQyWAI)
Aerodynamic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSJnYuYOhQA)
Digital Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N689QWwYJj4)
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPJt9enceh0)
Crescendolls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV2GxmvUGYU)
Nightvision (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laJDlO_X-jg)
Superheroes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfB-ovstN8Y)
High Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxCDyRqSnrI)
Something About Us (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgWzv6FuVUc)
Voyager (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef-XlN99Wq4)
Veridis Quo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hhtPICv-PE)
Short Circuit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-10iVwBdwg)
Face to Face (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ8wKeUWS3o)
Too Long (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e30lMrqQA5Q)

Enjoy! :)

One more French band that I think is cool is Modjo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modjo):
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qTqjBsH2LZY"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qTqjBsH2LZY" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

And of course there is Jacques Brel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Brel):
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/POGegLVKjdQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/POGegLVKjdQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

French rap is also quite good. For example, IAM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IAM_%28band%29):

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/l2rEdM5x4DU"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/l2rEdM5x4DU" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

My favorite GNR song, "Estranged."

The second half of this song was really one of those seminal rock moments for me. Somewhere around the 5-minute mark...

Well I jumped into the river
too many times to make it home
I'm out here on my own, drifting all alone
If it doesn't show, give it time
To read between the lines
Cause I see the storm getting closer
And the waves they get so high
Seems everything we've ever known here
Why must it drift away and die?

I'll never find anyone to replace you
Guess I'll have to make it through, this time
Oh this time
Without you

I knew the storm was getting closer
And all my friends said I was high
But everything we've ever known here
I never wanted it to die

That's the stuff...

If you Americans truly want to understand Alizée, you need to understand the European passion for football (or soccer as you like to call it).... Here's how we do it in Europe:

I've always found football (soccer) to be slow compared to hockey. But when you live in Canada and have snow 8 months of the year you tend to prefer the winter sports. Trying to get me to get excited about football would be like me trying to get you excited about curling. I don't think it's going to happen. Music isn't great but you get the picture.:)

I mean I was 16 at the time when she started hosting the show, too old for the show, but not to old to watch Elisha...:) Not music but for Elisha fans the second Ed the Sock interview, it seemed funnier when I saw it on TV...

Since I seem to share most of your tastes in English music, although no one posted a Pearl Jam video yet:confused:
I thought I would share some of the great French music coming out of Québec. First up is Annie Villeneuve a young singer who if not known to you in France will probably be soon. These first two aren't aren't my absolute favourite performances of these songs, every one is unique because she always sings live, but the lyrics are displayed as she sings them so you can sing along if you want.:D
Annie Villeneuve - Tomber à l'eau
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/sxWUiTUu8u8"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/sxWUiTUu8u8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Annie Villeneuve - Un ange qui passe
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YCF0O39QDTs"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YCF0O39QDTs" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Two other great perfomances:
Un Homme @ Bons Baisers de France (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flta9XC7LiI)
Quand je ferme les yeux @ Devine qui viens ce soir (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRTDvo9jplQ)

Here a beautiful song is made even more so because she sings it with her twin sister.
Annie & Suzie Villeneuve - S'il fallait
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/J_RvHBqNcQk"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/J_RvHBqNcQk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

And because the majority of you don't understand French here she sings in English, its a medley of 80's hits.
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ia66Oqkm2ow"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ia66Oqkm2ow" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Another one in English, but...
Annie Villeneuve - Everybody dance now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRrS5CtrJe0)

PS: It really sucks that YouTube is banned for you guys, I remember reading somewhere that it was because of the adult content on the site. And aFrenchie do the announcers sound funny to you because this is how we speak French in Canada.:)

And aFrenchie do the announcers sound funny to you because this is how we speak French in Canada.:)
I'm surprised because I expected a different accent from other Canadians than Quebecers. It's exactly the same than theirs. Or have I misunderstood and those announcers are Quebecers actually?
And yes they're funny, in the good way, amusing... :)

Twitch
10-21-2006, 08:23 PM
Those announcers are all Quebequers, when someone says French Canadian it usually is assumed that they mean Quebequers, being that they are really the only French or French as a first language Canadians. And there really isn't any French TV stations based outside of Québec, they just get broadcast accross the country. The only other French group are the Acadians but it is so small that they only have the odd show here and there no stations of their own. And people usually refer to them as Acadians not so much French Canadians, because internationally it usually means Quebequers. And like all countries the TV anouncers speak clearer when on TV, so you don't need subtitles to understand them if you're French and not Canadian. :)
And since Québec is the only officially French province they end up regulating French in Canada, because it's easier for other provinces to just follow their guidelines, although New Brunswick is the only officially bilingual province. Why most of us who speak French, besides the Acadians, sound like Quebequers once we are fluent enough to get rid of a really strong English accent. :)

Yeah that is kinda surprising. Well, here's my personal favorite Pearl Jam song, though I'm not that big of a fan of theirs I absolutely love this track.

But she still visits her family in Edmundston every year and is still a great Canadian singer. And an interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcTYNzpA3TE) because I never thought I'd she Natasha singing as a child again. Although I saw about as much of it the first time as shown in the interview because I wasn't much older than she was and had no interest in French music or talent contests.
PS: aFrenchie, I tried but couldn't really tell, does Natasha still sound like shes from Canada or has she learned to speak like your used to hearing French?
PPS: Don't worry atra201 I haven't forgotten I just haven't finished packaging and uploading everything yet. Yes, she does sound like a Quebecer. But it's true that her accent is not heavy (anymore?). And I'm talking about her interview: you hardly notice an accent when a Quebecer sings. Don't remember for other foreign people but it may be true as well. Accent are tones in the spoken mode, not in singing mode I guess...

More French music from Québec artists, Garou and Marilou. Garou should be well known to those who listen to French music, and I doubt that he will sound girly to those who said that they find guys who sing in French girly. I picked these first two videos because they go great together, L'injustice is really interesting if you pay attention not to Garou but the people around him. I thought I would stir things up with a rocking blonde from Montréal, Marie-Chantal Toupin. I wish I had stuff off her new live album but it only came out Oct 3, look for her on the French stations promoting it if you live in Canada (Oct 30 on TVA and Nov 4 on La Fureur on Radio-Canada). The first video is the long version of En Toi, 16 min total but only 10 min because of YouTube restrictions. Don't worry the song is only the first 4 minutes.

Marie-Chantal Toupin - En Toi

Another great song from her self titled album -J'veux que tu saches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slYwGqe0fB0)

PS: For those of you practicing French Rs, IMO she pronouces her Rs just fine;)
And the audio quality sucks in some of these videos do yourself a favour and get the mp3s. Archambault (http://www.archambault.ca/store/default.asp?lang_id=fr&adw=music_music) sells them and pretty much every CD by every artist out of Québec.

EDIT: In case it mixes you up Toé is Québecois for Toi, like Moé is for Moi, but they are not used all the time. And tanné as in Je suis tanné or Chu tanné means fed up, so much so I had to look up marre to know what it meant. :)

With all the Alizée-inspired Francophiles here, I was wondering if anyone has seen that classic French film, Jean Coctaeu’s Beauty and the Beast? Here’s a clip –

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Bt1TNeKoabE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Bt1TNeKoabE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

It’s been some years since I’ve watched the whole thing, but I remember the Beast’s castle being pretty creepy – excellent effects, esp. for such an old film.

Long before Alizée, this film inspired me to learn a little French – just a little ... one line, actually. There’s one scene where the Beast says (in French), “Pardon me … for being a beast!” I remember watching that scene over and over until I learned how to say that (I’ve forgotten now … it’s been a few years). I just thought that was a great line to be able to say in French.

Anyway, it’s a great film, and I recommend it if you haven’t seen it.

If you listen to The Beatles, their English accent is very apparent when they (any of them) sing.

Joydrop - beautiful
Wow, glad to see I'm not the only Joydrop fan, and a song off of Metasexual even more impressive. Most people only know of the video for Sometimes Wanna Die. And I actually met Tara Slone and the boys back in 02 after a small concert at the Marquee Club in Halifax and still have the copy of Viberate they signed for me. Too bad they are separated and pursuing different projects, Tara Slone's new CD was just released(digitally anyway, actual CD scheduled for January) you can download it here Just Look Pretty And Sing (http://www.audiolunchbox.com/album?a=60075)

Glad to see this thread isn't dead yet. I'm not sure how Alizée fans will take to Andrée Watters, but I like what I've seen and heard so far. Some of the songs I enjoy were never made into videos, but you can find out more on her site. http://andreewatters.com/ She is currently playing Mina in the musical Dracula, Entre l'amour et la mort, currently touring Québec. It's official site: http://www.zone3.ca/dracula/

Off her latest album - à travers:
Andrée Watters - Laisse la pluie

Try Archambault (http://www.archambault.ca/store/default.asp) for music out of Québec, they have almost everything. And provide international shipping, but international orders have to be placed over the phone, check the faq. They can at times be more expensive then Amazon.ca, but will always have all the music released from Québec, and also offer mp3s for download saving shipping cost if you don't care about the actual CD.
EDIT: Prices are in $CDN so they aren't as bad as you might think :)

RMJ
11-21-2006, 03:00 PM
Web shop that doesn't allow ordering from web ?

They surely lost one of their future customer !

I think I'll just stick to amazon.ca if I need stuff from Canada.

And who would pay for mp3 ??!?! If you are gonna pay for music it must be quality stuff...

Twitch
11-21-2006, 03:06 PM
No, only international orders are not from the web, they ship to the US and Canada from the website, but don't get enough international orders to make it worthwhile to include web shipping for them yet. They are still a really small local company, especially compared to sites like Amazon. So for now all you have to do for interanational orders is assemble your order on the webpage and call them or you can email them to place it. I thought it was more considerate than just saying no international orders, like a lot of US based sites do, and yes no international shipping includes no shipping to Canada. Because they specialize in French music form Québec most of their sales are in Québec, a lot of these artists CDs can't be found outside of the province, even in Canada.

RMJ
11-21-2006, 03:15 PM
Well, it's still silly !

Usually when shop won't ship abroad is because it's expensive, not because it's extra work to add one text box to order form.

Since the money isn't the problem in this case, I don't really see why they makes it so hard to order... It really doesn't make any sense... It just makes life harder for both, the customer and the shop.

Twitch
11-21-2006, 03:39 PM
Only thing I can see is country's have different laws about credit card fraud, and they might not want to bother dealing with the problems that can occur with fraudulent orders that might occur in other countries yet. Dealing with any that occur here is probably enough. But you can always write an email complaining about it, I do find it strange they don't offer international shipping to at least the EU, after all you can't say that there isn't a market in France for French music, and on Amazon.ca you can often see in the comments complaints that the CDs aren't carried by Amazon.fr yet. But the website hasn't been around that long yet, and seems to be mostly interested in catering to Québecers.

Lately I've been getting into Russian music (in addition to Alizée, that is, not in stead of!), and this song has been stuck in my head. The weird thing about getting a song in a foreign language stuck in your head is that you try to sing along with it by just mimicing the sounds moreso than the individual words, as such ... at least, I do. The same thing happens to me with Alizée, since I don't know French, either. :)

Actually, I was already starting to listen to some Russian music before AA-1 revealed her true identity (:) ) , but I thought it was really cool when that came out.

Hmm, while I'm here and on the subject, here's another Russian tune that I particularly like ...

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8KgjtSOgrtE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8KgjtSOgrtE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

This one is from a group called Nu Virgos, a.k.a. Via Gra (and, yes, I think that is an intentional joke on their part ... though perhaps AA-1 could verify that?). This group is now a trio, and neither of the original two members are among them any longer.

Man, I've missed out on pretty much all TV for the past two and a half years :(
Happens when you go overseas, and not just TV. But I always thought AFRTS did a good job of presenting you a good viewing schedule.

IMHO, being overseas was the best experience; and when you get back, you appreciate the U.S. more so because of some the amendities that people (who have not lived in another culture for a specific length of time) often take for granted here. ;)

You want my advice? Don't have a merry Christmas this year.

Have a Twisted Christmas (http://youtube.com/watch?v=De47fjH6RKY).

I showed this video to a few of the girls in the chat room. I suggest watching it because Dee Snider is hot and Maggie Moor ain't to shabby either.

More than that, it's a mash-up of sorts of We're Not Gonna Take It and O Come All Ye Faithful.

LOL, I just saw an interview last night where Dee said that they were all looking for the final nail in the coffin of their career and someone said let's do a Christmas album. And Dee went on to say back when they first started he was like where is the headbanger's Christmas music, so they decided to actually do one now. And it actually is seeming to help revive their career.

Haha! That was great! I must admit, I was a little surprised at how well Dee Snider can actually sing. I mean, I love "We're Not Gonna Take It," but his vocal performance in that one was (appropriately) sort of a cross between a growl and a scream. In this one, he's just singing, and he does it quite well.

Since most of us here (I guess all of us really) are open to music in languages other than our own, languages we might not understand, and since Lobowolf14 recently asked in another thread:

In fact, please drop me a line of some other foreign artists that are good, b/cause chances are I will like it.

I figured I would start a thread for sharing “foreign” music. Not to be provincial or anything, but since this is “Alizée America,” I mean by that music in languages other than English. I realize that the “Other Music Interests” thread has some of this already, but I thought it might be nice to have a thread just for sharing foreign stuff – music I like but don’t understand, as it were.

I’ll start off with a couple of songs from a Spanish duo called Azucar Moreno (which I believe means “Brown Sugar”).

I found an episode of Acadieman uploaded to Youtube. It's just a stupid little cartoon available on local access cable out of Moncton but it is in Chiac (mix of French and English) and thought aFrenchie would like hearing it spoken not just reading it. I don't watch it but will admit this one did have its moments (Mur-Mart lol), but based on the comments (most also in chiac) it is the worst episode, but the only one on Youtube. Not the best example of the Acadien accent but you do start to hear it, and if you go to the Moncton area this is how most of them speak. Sorry the chiac is mostly French, but since there are now more members who understand French I posted it instead of a PM in case they were curious as well.

Part2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlOAL-Kk-oI (Jean Coutu is the name of a drugstore chain)
Part3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7paJRFmGso

And uploaded by the same user J'ai mangé un toaster (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es4mKRfKqcI) which is now probably the stupidest thing I have ever put on this site. It made no sense to me but helps show the cultural barrier that exists between English and French Canadians. The French complain that the rest of Canada doesn't get them, and when it comes to stuff like this I almost have to agree. This, I guess, would be considered the French equivalent in Canada to redneck humour. Although other stuff, like this by Elvis Gratton Scene de la limousine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJWQCN5BKfc), I did find funny, notice his Québecois swearing. Go to www.sfockersti.tk for all of these and more chiac and French Canadian humour.

Nobody really does except for them. :) At least now when I get confused and frustrated trying to talk to them I can say that even a Frenchman couldn't understand them completely (I doubt they would care though). And because it was for TV it was actually clearer than what you can run into in the lower half of the Province (in the Northern half we speak a lot more closely to how they do in Québec).

I listen to a bunch of foreign music. Mainly this band called Parokya ni Edgar and another band of the same language, Eraserheads.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=_-kRHazu2Kw Harana by Parokya ni Edgar which translates into Seranade. I've been listening to them since I was a kid since I was born in the Philipines and moved to America 5 or 6 years ago? lol anyways

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8SDM1vVPYZw Freebird by SMAP. Japanese song, don't understand but good party beat :P

http://youtube.com/watch?v=cKn18VbnPPc Fly by Epik High. Korean song, again another good party beat lol. Wait for it to come to 1:28 because the intro is quite long and boring -_-.

Then Alizee ofcourse.

Other than those songs, I pretty much listen to some Classics like Zeppelin, Who, Floyd, Doors, Beatles, a few pop/indie/rap/dance songs come in there too because dancing is fun. Christmas music is most recent in my playlist right now though :)

yeah your right it was Stéphane Grapelli:) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephane_Grapelli)
do alot of people in france still listen to them?
Not enough for me :( but there's an audience of course...
Do you know Jean-Luc Ponty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Luc_Ponty) and Didier Lockwood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Didier_Lockwood) btw? The former lives in the US since the late 70s now and played with Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra and some others... They both are modern Grapellis :). I like them even more.

Here are some videos of Jean-Luc Ponty if you want:
http://youtube.com/results?search_query=jean+luc+ponty&search=Search
Most of them are from this year, some others from the 70s with John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra) but the image quality is bad.

Try the first one in the list for example (2006)

Need I say I'm a HUGE fan of Ponty? I don't know where you're from btw. Are you an Italian? (Turin), anyway here are all his CDs at Amazon.com (US): here (http://www.amazon.com/Jean-Luc-Ponty/artist/B000AQ2VF6/102-0066223-8518512). You can read visitors' comments and listen to extracts.
(or at Amazon.fr: here (http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/403-9110674-4739604?%5Fencoding=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=music-fr&field-artist=Jean-Luc%20Ponty))

Maybe because it is getting late here I felt like posting what I happened to be listening to, instead of the French videos I was going to put up. This is probably only going to appeal to very few of you but it is some of the most relaxing music I've heard. I found out about this group because the organist is actually the organist at Saint Mary's Basilica where I went to mass (when I actually went) while living in Halifax, and to hear it played in person on the Basilica's Casavant Frères organ is so much nicer than these recordings. Because of the organ's size you can almost feel the lower notes when they are played. When going to a concert you are told to bring a pillow and find a comfortable place to lie down close your eyes and let the music wash over you, especially nice when you have your girlfriend cuddled up with you (although at first it just didn't seem right to be doing that in a church). The group is called Sanctuary, but it is not church music so don't worry.

This piece is called Atiphon (http://www.sanctuarymusic.ca/upload/Media/Antiphon-Track4.mp3)
And this one The Heart has its Reasons (http://www.sanctuarymusic.ca/upload/Media/TheHeartHasItsReasons-Track1.mp3)
And a live recording of Recarcades (http://www.sanctuarymusic.ca/upload/Media/Recarcades-BGuy.mp3)

And if you want to hear more there are a bunch of other pieces here:http://www.sanctuarymusic.ca/ (http://www.sanctuarymusic.ca/index.php)
Go to CD Releases there are some there, if you click More Audio Previews you will get more. Also notice the three live concert recordings on the right of the CD Releases page.

Here is the video of them performing The Heart has its Reasons, it is not at St Mary's though. But at an actual concert you don't often get to see them because the organ console is located in the balcony at the back of the Basilica. The video is not all that interesting, or necessary because it is best just to lay back close your eyes and experience the music, but this is the offsite video section.

Neoteny, except for the sexy part I guess your ex-wife and I have the same opinion, there. ;)~

This isn't Tool, it's a bluegrass cover of Ace of Spades by Hayseed Dixie or something like that, it's quite good.

This is the Notorious B.I.G. featuring 112 with "Sky's the Limit". Excellent track, Biggie was so good.

And, finally, I have to worm a Tool vid in here somewhere. This is the music video for Parabol/Parabola.

Here's a rather cheesy video of a catchy tune by the Russian girl group Propaganda. The song is called "Мари Полюбила Хуана," which I believe roughly translates as "Mary Fell in Love with Juan." The video obviously has a Western theme (actually, I think the opening says something about Mexico), but I don't know what's up with the camels? Anyway, I really like the song.
