So much more is competing for peoples attention today that the competition is much more cutthroat. Also, as the number of venues has multiplied, the old controls have partially come off, and the intensity needed to attract attention has increased. One of the casualties is good "family" programming. For example, 10 years ago, 10 TV channels was common. If you had cable (and much fewer did) then you might have gotten 40 channels. Now it is more like 400. And everybody gets their own program. The internet was not yet for the masses. Devices like iPods did not yet exist. Neither did Napster. The computer (PC) was running Windows 98. Cell phones were actually phones, and mostly in the hands of adults. Today, my daughter sends/receives 8,000 texts a month. She will be on facebook (with about 1,000 friends) and have one or two IMs going at a time (while texting). She has instant access to several hunderd teens at any given moment. The kids today face pressures we never did. I wish them all a lot of luck keeping their priorities straight. Bottom line is it is a different world than just 10 years ago. ![]()

![]() Yah there are no generations...especially when most people 40+ have some form of cellular communication...and know how to operate a computer...

![]() No argument that everything is more intense now. However, imagine what it would have been like to grow up with this intensity. Imagine what the 9th grade would have been like, with all the social pressure added on top of everything else. I am watching my daughter cope with all this and am amazed that she actually can. As for the singularity... I actually think that 2012 will be more interesting. ![]()
