The "proper" pronunciation would probably be "Deh-cay-tur", but with the southern accent of.. most everyone who lives in this general region, it's "Dih-cay-tur."

I really can't see a distinction between "deh" and "dih"

SDoS - How Decatur, Alabama is linked to Alizèe
Apparently, Azhiri lives in what locals call the "Tinnissee" River basin. (That should clarify what the isolated Dixie "e" sounds like.) Actually, the upland Southern accent sounds far less strange to me than my Brooklyn origins might suggest, because as a minor, I would spend many hours each week listening to a late-night New York City radio talk-show host who had grown up in North Carolina. (I wouldn't be surprised if Ben's Mom remembers him.) You can hear what he sounded like from the 1983 TV show excerpt below.
In scanning the Wikipedia article on Decatur, my eye caught the detail of how the New York tricities municipality of Albany gave its name to a partial precursor of today's Decatur. I mention this because a tricities partner of the New York Albany, Utica, is the home town of original Disney Mouseketeer Annette Funicello, with whom I make a somewhat spooky comparison with Alizée at Alizée: The return of Annette. I would be surprised if Azhiri or her age-peer Jalen had heard of Annette previously, but no doubt she is familiar to their grandparents, who might get a kick out of hearing her music again via the YouTube videos embedded in the aforementioned study. (Tell them that Alizèe is basically Annette with post-Punk tattoos and piercings!) Sadly, today Annette is elderly and has been very sick a long time. But I have a confession to make. When I was a TV-watching preschooler, then teen-aged Annette was my "age-inappropriate" virtual girlfriend. Indeed, the princesse lointaine phenomenon has a very old heritage - ever older than yours truly! |

Doc, I wish I could plug "the internet" into your brain directly. It'd be a lot better, and hopefully not have as much spam and porn

I looked up my hometown on Wikipedia and apparently that is where Sawyer is said to be from on the show Lost. Weird stuff. It was revealed in the third season. Hm.
