One thing we have to realize too is that if MF had done a better job of rewriting J'en ai marre, J'ai pas vingt ans and Youpidou into English songs, she would have been huge in the USA. Britney is a talented, beautiful young artist. Madonna is incredibly talented, but neither of them could have brought to the table what Alizée did. Her charm, her beauty, her character, her singing, her dancing were beyond compare. The numbers that would have happened if Alizee had happened here, exposed to the US fan base, would have been staggering.

For a French girl is very difficult to sing in perfect english, and even to translate with the same armonic effect.But i agree that her beauty and talent is miles over Britney Spears.

In all honesty, I don't think more refined English versions of Alizee's music would've done much to further her popularity in the USA.

As much as we all admire Alizee's beauty, it's not the same sort of appearance as the nearly supermodel type looks of someone like Madonna or Britney Spears. Not to say either type is better or worse, just different, but it's clear which one is generally gonna be more popular in the states.

Plus, Britney Spears had already filled that young, attractive, super popular singer niche 2 years before Alizee popped up, though maybe there could be two doing that at one time, I don't know. And whilst you'd still describe Alizee as a talented singer, her vocals wouldn't have exactly stood tall ahead of other popular singers at the time either. She's a good singer, but not the sort to blow you out of the water with her vocals.

Also have to consider that whilst Alizee could do English covers of specific songs, she would still initially struggle speaking English for things like interviews, even if she had a lot of lessons.

In some aspects I think you're right Scruffy, Alizee's charm, character and dancing would prove effective anywhere. But for the reasons mentioned prior I struggle to see a world in which it happens with just a little more advertising or 'Americanisation' if you will.

But perhaps that's me being pessimistic, just expressing my honest take on the idea.

I disagree. I think if American men were asked to rate a 19-year old Britney versus a 19-year old Alizee, 70% - 80% of American men would rate Alizee as better looking. (In the case of Madonna, I think 80% - 90% of American men would rate Alizee as better looking.)

I think "J'ai pas vingt ans" would have been a big hit in the U.S.--- the song has a very "American" feel to it.

I'm not sure how JEM or YOUP would have done--- they have more of a "European" feel to them (this is particularly true of YOUP, with all its minor chords.)

Agree 101%. Britney, etc. are just basic beauties and creations of giant marketing machinery.

Alizée is a classically beautiful, even superior, incredibly wonderful gift of nature that you can fall in love with at first glance no matter what she does.
