in my neck of the woods marriage is almost nothing anymore, almost a ritual only the rich perform. And for good reason only my uncle is married still out of my whole family

Nichol Kidman was married for a long time with kids, wasn't she? And her marriage didn't last. One in every two marriages do not last in America. I don't know the statistics in France, but in America most marriages fail. Marriage is nothing but tradition now and a way to publicly express your love for another person. Most people just do it so their relationship is official, and is not frowned upon by certain people such as the parents and family. Also, if you go to church you are encouraged to get married before you can live together or have sex. Marriage is tradition carried on by the older generations. I wouldn't be surprised if marriag dies out in the next few generations.

More input based on my own sketchy understandings of things. Others, particularly French members, may be able to correct me:

I watched a French news report on marriage in France, the basic point of which was that it is going out, fast. Among the young, it is viewed as just an old traditional ritual, mostly unnecessary. There aren't any legal benefits to marriage that aren't available to unmarried partners or domestic companions, and the marriage rate has dropped by something around half in the last generation alone.

That's a part of why it doesn't surprise me Alizée and Jérémy would have a spur of the moment wedding in Vegas. In the popular view of their generation, it isn't the ceremony that's important, it's their commitment to each other.

In one of the recent TV clips mentioning Alizée's impending return, they refer to the album being written alongside "son compagnon" Jérémy Chatelain. "Son compagnon" translates equally as "her companion" and "her husband." There is no difference.

That's likely a very over-simplified view of it, but I think there may be tid-bits in it.

Cooney, I think, but I may be wrong that you are right about the benefits. Marriage used to have lots of benefits such as tax, and other financial benefits, I think. But now those benefits are pretty much the same, married or not.

most celerities keep their name that they are known by best, therefore i highly doubt that she'll ever change her last to Chatelain

She may have wanted to keep it a secret and got fooled by Vegas quote of "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" lol I do like her maiden name the best, but I wouldnt care if she wanted to change it.

Thumbs up All You Need Is ALIZEE!

A lot of great music artists go by just their first name.

And ALIZEE is definitely in that category!!!
