One of the coolest things about this music is how it grows on you. I can remember my initial reaction to Mademoiselle Juliette, how it seemed too repetitious, too simple, not enough buildup, just wham! into the first verse, but I love it now.
I think L'effet is going to have to grow on me a while. Maybe it's because it's been too long since I had a small child myself, I don't know. Or maybe because I can't quite understand the lyrics yet. The music isn't immediately catchy, it's quite subtle. I think it's my least favorite, but we'll see. Like MG I'm not a big jazz fan. Everything else, I'm liking a lot. I even like the sound of Alizée la rappeuse (if that's a word, which I doubt). Quote:
There's so much variety here that everyone's going to find something they don't like as well as the rest.

Personally, I adore L'Effet. It's a pretty sophisticated example of the genre, and I find it very touching (and impressive that a "pop singer" can pull it off).
It pains me to see anybody around here use the word "hate" when describing her work, but everybody's entitled to opinions.

I'm coming to MesGourmandises's defense here. I think your descriptions are spot on, but I think your scoring is too high. I would score most of them sub-5/10 with MJ & Fifty/Sixty 6/10 or maybe 7/10. Sorry but this is just how I feel. There's only a couple of songs on here I like, the rest I listen to them and I just feel like...'blah'. I just don't feel any soul in these tunes, they don't get me excited. And that's disappointing considering how long we've waited.

In a hurry to do what remains a mystery, though. To anyone who doesn't like the sounds on first hearing, I repeat: they grown on you. Give them time. I'm taking that advice myself about L'effet.

I just heard L'effet again and, as I predicted, it's getting better. Kind of amazing, I don't know how she pulls this off. I really didn't like that song at all the first time I heard it (although I wouldn't use the word "hate,") but this last time I kind of did. Still not my favorite, though. BTW French Fan, love your new avatar and sig. I don't think I've seen that picture on the left side of your signature before.

Is that from inside the pochette of the album? I haven't seen it before.

Wow, I expected nothing from L'Effet based on the sample, but loved it the first time I heard it all the way through.
I think you guys are over-thinking its structure. It's jazz; just roll with it. Curl up by the fire and the Christmas tree, and imagine Lili serenading you from atop a shiny black piano. If the hot cocoa you're drinking doesn't warm you up, the song will. A fantastic end to a fan-freaking-tastic album. - N |
