I agree with others find someone other than the Geeks. I have a place by me that charges $70 flat plus parts to fix computers. They are getting slammed because of all the over priced places like the Geek Squad are driving people to find cheaper and better alternatives. I was lucky to get in early and score one of their $35 cards. Down side is all my employees know I have it. So when a computer goes down they bring it in to work and whine until I give in and take up to the repair shop for $35.

OK - Geek Squad charged $65.00 to tell me "we think your motherboard is bad, but we'll do a data backup on your hard-drive for $99.00...."

Two things jumped out at me.

#1 - they did not KNOW what was wrong with my 'puter after 4 days....

#2 - They never said my hard-drive was bad, just that they would do a backup . . . . .? I said "WTF?", and got my tower back, and out the door I went....

Took it to a guy that does computer repair on the side (he's a Chem/Physics Teacher full time) - He diagnosed and repaired a burned out video card in about 124 mins, after getting it to boot with a Linux Troubleshooting disk.....

Total Cost - $129.00 (included new video card, because he and i are the same age!)......

WOOT! BACK IN BIDNIS!

Ed

yes do NOT go to geek squad.
i once bought a stick of ram, which is easy as shit to put on a laptop, just open up the slot, pop it in.

the freakin guy told me "but this isnt an easy procedure, i recommend you let us do it, well only charge you $39.99". i said no, i went home, took me about 30 seconds to stick the ram in, i SO wanted to tell them about how dumb their prices are but im not an asshole like that haha. shit it took me longer to open up the packaging than it did to put it in.

Good choice, Ed, but you could have done even better than that, in my opinion. Even cheaper than my previous suggestion, actually, is to look on Craigslist in your area for people who are willing to do computer consulting. Because of the multitude of technologically-apt students, you can easily find somebody willing to work for $20 an hour.

Spoiled too. COD4? That takes some serious horsepower. It will be many more months before I'll have a rig capable of spitting out that kind of graphical juice.
