Default Broadband has arrived

I live in the sticks in southern Lousiana, and no broadband has ever been available here. Since 1997 i've been trying to get DSL or Cable and nothing has been done. Today when coming work from work, what do I see? A cable truck on my street. We now have cable! I've been waiting 11 years for this! I'll finally be able to watch a YouTube vid and not have to wait 45 minutes for a song to download! . I'm thrilled about this, what's the first thing I should do when I get it hooked up in a few days?

I remember when I first got hooked up to DSL, the whole world opened up for me. Just make sure you eat and sleep from time to time...

So true, but yet we keep on asking for faster and faster rates.

Congrats on the broadband! Just remember to power-cycle your modem now and then especially when things become slower than normal (assuming you're on DHCP).

Congrats puffyrock2 :-) Glad to hear they're letting you join the modern era.

First thing I'd suggest with a new cable hookup is simply to browse all your favorite sites and see how wickedly fast things load. Then find yourself a nice huge file, 100MB+ (one of the HQ Alizée vids around here would do nicely!), and download it. Drool over the fact that instead of having to set the download and go to bed, you'll now barely have time to go to the bathroom before the file is done.

28.8 kb at a time, the poor soul.

The first thing you should do?

Enjoy the sound of silence. You shall not have to dial any longer!

I'm also surprised that dial up is still around. Verizon knocked on my door the other day saying that they are installing a fiber optic line. I'm wondering how much faster that would be if I decide to upgrade...very tempting.

Congratulation!
Just to be safe, install wired or wireless router even you have one PC. Don't trust host based firewall alone. (i.e. firewall software inside your PC)
